July 14th, 2012 ~ A Community Voice members held a celebration in New Orleans at Holy Angels Concert Hall to celebrate and say thanks to numerous community heroes who have tirelessly given their time and energy to helping the community and fighting for social justice. It was a great event. ACV got a special proclamation from the New Orleans City Council as a thanks for our work to improve New Orleans neighborhoods. Click here for video of the event.
July 3rd, 2012 A Community Voice members protest for jobs in the Lower 9th Ward. Residents came out to picket for jobs because recovery projects such as the streetscape improvements to N. Claiborne and St. Claude Ave. use out of town companies who fail to comply with Section 3 laws and hire residents from the community.
This is the first of many such protests to win jobs for residents.
June 28th, 2012 Over 200 residents came out to the A Community Voice Hire NOLA jobs forum at First Grace United Methodist Church on Canal Street against the issue of jobs for residents. Billions of recovery dollars have flooded New Orleans. Yet, local minority contractors and local residents are denied the opportunity to apply for contracts and gain jobs in the recovery effort. There are no training programs or enforcement on companies to hire local residents. Time and time again these good-paying jobs have gone workers outside the State. ACV is building up a database of employees and fighting for jobs for all residents. If you need a job, call ACV at 504-941-2852 to get in our jobs database and be invited to the next meeting. Together, we can win jobs!
June 21, 2012 A Community Voice member meet with Legal Services in the Upper 9th Ward on understanding their legal rights to compensation from RSD and Lathan construction for damage done to their homes during the rebuilding of Frantz school. Thanks to Southeast Louisiana Legal Services and their Director Mark Moreau!
If you have damage to your home done from Frantz school construction, please call A Community Voice 504-941-2852.
May 19th, 2012 A Community Voice members gather to clean up the 1300 block of Forstall Street in the Lower 9th Ward. Across from Bonart Playground and swimming pool and 3 blocks from where school children, the elderly and single women catch the bus, was an open and un-boarded abandoned home and overgrown area. ACV members cleaned this blight up as a part of the City’s Love Your Block. Thanks to the City for a $500 gift care to buy equipment, the small businesses in the Lower 9th Ward who donated water and garbage bags and to the many volunteers for their hard work.
May 17th, 2012 A Community Voice members gathered in the Upper 9th Ward to work on their campaign to get the Recovery School District (RSD) and Lathan Construction to take responsibility for damaging homes during the reconstruction of Frantz School.
This is an ongoing campaign and A Community Voice will not give up we get justice for these homeowners.
A Community Voice held a meeting on May 10th, 2012 in the Lower 9th Ward with city officials to get an update on rebuilding progress in the Lower 9 and demand jobs for residents on the rebuilding projects such as the Streetscape project on N. Claiborne and St. Claude Avenue and the rebuilding of the Sanchez community center. Over 100 residents signed up to be in the database for jobs. Way to go ACV!
