Our sister nonprofit, Southern United Neighborhoods, is helping a woman come back to the Lower 9th Ward who was a major victim of contractor fraud. She is elderly, disabled and really struggling to become whole. A contractor took off with all her money and left her home UN-livable. SUN can only do so much. She needs help getting her appliances, light fixtures and making her home as accessible as possible. She needs funds to buy basic things. Please help if you can. Visit southernunitedneighborhoods.org to donate today. We have fixed 23 homes in the Lower 9th Ward and helped residents who thought they would never be able to come back to the Lower 9th Ward.

As you know it is that time of year and we are coming up on Hurricane Katrina’s 9th anniversary.

Do you think that we should take this opportunity to send a message to the nation that the funds are not being spent in our community  even though the funds were raised to fix our neighborhoods?

We have documents that show that the city spent $30 million on the Crescent Park on the river by the Marigny and built a new park at Lafitte and spent funds across the river on parks and many things but didn’t fix our area.  Do you think that we should fight for our fair share of the funds?

For about an hour we will be at Reynes and St. Claude by the bridge at 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.  Sat. Aug. 30th, to Memorialize and Protest 9 years later and we need more.

New Orleans, LA

Thanks to everyone who came out.  We had a great turnout of 250 and much from all our volunteers and sponsors. February 27th, 2014   A Community Voice hosted a candidate forum in New Orleans for an opportunity for residents to ask questions of the candidates in the runoff March 15th elections.  Over 100 residents came out.

Jan 20th, 2014 Students from Xavier, Tulane and Loyola canvassed with ACV members for MLK service day in New Orleans.

Jan 15th and Jan 22nd, 2014.  A Community Voice in coalition with Voters East of the Industrial Canal organized candidate forums for upcoming city council, mayor’s and sheriff’s elections in New Orleans.

July 29th, 2013 A Community Voice hosted a community meeting in New Orleans East on what the state’s refusal to accept Medicaid Expansion means for Health Care in Louisiana.

Lanny Roy, President, A Community Voice protests Jindal Policies on Capitol Steps

Flanked by signs and posters with demands to Jindal to Expand Medicaid funding and Stop the Cuts-Save Jobs, Lanny Roy, Lake Charles resident and president of A Community Voice, spoke to a diverse crowd.  At its height, nearly 1000 residents rallied on the steps of the state’s capitol.  Mr. Roy, though fighting for his own life, with a condition brought on by working in chemical plants in Lake Charles, valiantly came to address the “Enough is Enough” rally.

Using a megaphone, while seated in a wheelchair, Mr. Roy addressed the crowd organized by Forward Louisiana. The new coalition is the most diverse of all to have protested on the capitol steps with member groups that range from community and labor organizations, to worker, disability, human rights and education health care advocates.  Roy told the crowd that A Community Voice had found Gov. Jindal insensitive and unaccountable, when he failed to respond to repeated requests to discuss the issues.

Interrupted by applause, Mr. Roy stated “I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for the charity hospital system.  The other hospitals don’t do what Charity does.  Charity Hospitals are a Louisiana tradition that have lasted well over 200 years.   We need to keep our traditions”.

Meanwhile, inside the State Capitol, a banner was dropped by Forward Louisiana member that demanded to the legislators, “Take the Medicaid Money”  Shortly afterwards, a Senate Health Committee panel voted 4 – 3 to expand Medicaid in Louisiana.
